A PERSIAN EPIC is a visually breathtaking cinematic shadow play for all ages, created by HAMID RAHMANIAN, a 2014 Guggenheim fellowship-winning filmmaker/visual artist.  The play unfolds an action-packed magical tale of star-crossed lovers from the 10th-century Persian epic Shahnameh (‘The Book of Kings’), – Zaul and Rudabeh, who triumph at the end against all odds. Rahmanian's graphics, derived from the visual tradition of the region, will be rendered as puppets, costumes, masks, scenography and digital animation, all of which will come to life in a “live animation” shadow casting technique perfected by shadow master Larry Reed on a cinema-size screen. The play also features an original score by the acclaimed musical team, Loga Ramin Torkian & Azam Ali. Feathers of Fire had its world premiere at the BROOKLYN ACADEMY OF MUSIC in 2016.

RUNNING TIME: 70 MINUTES, IN ENGLISH.

Zahhak: The Legend of the Serpent King is an exciting shadow play performance that retells a classic tale from the Shahnameh or Book of Kings, originally penned in the tenth century AD by the Persian poet, Ferdowsi. The story tells of the misguided Prince Zahhak who is easily swayed by the devil to do away with his crowned father and usurp the thrown. Soon after, King Zahhak is duped again by the devil whose seemingly respectful kisses turn into monstrous snakes that grow out of the king’s shoulders. The Serpent King grows infamous throughout the land for his treachery and oppression of the known world. He rules for one thousand years before a noble and valiant young Iranian man named Feraydun gains the strength and army to defeat the unjust King. Inspired by Hamid Rahmanian’s seminal book, Shahnameh: The Epic of the Persian Kings. (In English, 20 minutes)

Written and Directed by Hamid Rahmanian
Performed by: Yahya Allhansa, Leila Ghasnavi, Jon Riddleburger, Headyat Shafeei and Ian Sweetman
